A Marketer's New Years Resolution List

It’s that time of the year again, where everyone is making new years resolutions. I may be a bit late, but it’s ok, I want to jump in on the bandwagon. 2009 is the year for you, as a corporate marketer, to dedicate to digital media. So here are a few tips to help you grow.

In 2009 I will:

  • Recognize that Social Media is here to stay. It is a medium to reach people, and it’s not going anywhere. Learn to use it or fall behind.
  • Realize that Social Media is a medium, not a marketing strategy. It’s not different than TV, Direct Mail, or Newspapers. The way you advertise and how you do it, is the only thing that changes.
  • Create a blog and actually use it. Don’t think corporations need a blog? You’d be surprised at how many do, and how often traditional media will reference them. A blog is a great way to connect with your consumers directly. Leverage it to give just enough information to convince consumers to buy your products.
  • Understand that the Internet space requires determination, persistence, and a true investment. Sites need to be maintained and updated frequently. An outdated site that is not aesthetically pleasing will reflect poorly on the brand.
  • Try to search how the consumer searches. Internet users quickly and frequently change their mind. With the ability to have every product at their fingertips, consumers will not hesitate to buy a competing product. To ensure a sale you must make sure your site, makes it easy to find products, offers social proof, and has a streamlined, error free checkout process.

In 2009 digital media will continue to grow. Traditional print is losing money, and going bankrupt in this tough economy, while the digital sphere continues to grow. Will your company take advantage of this? Will you be the marketer that introduces the idea to the theme?

Let me know what you think. What were your new media resolutions for this year?
